Felicia Angeja Viator is Associate Professor of History at San Francisco State University. Prior to writing about music, she was known as “Neta,” one of the first women to work as a mobile and club DJ in the Bay Area hip-hop and reggae dancehall scene. Born and raised near Oakland, she has stayed close to the California coast because it reminds her of the Azores islands, where her family is rooted. She currently lives in San Francisco.
